Terraria 1.4.5.7 update drops with gem staff rework and crossplay tease

Re-Logic dropped the Terraria 1.4.5.7 update on Steam today, and it’s the final hotfix for Bigger and Boulder — unless something breaks badly enough to force a 1.4.5.8. That’s the official word, and honestly, I’m kind of stunned by the scope here.

I went in expecting a bug-squash patch. What I got is a content drop that reads like a mini-update: over thirty new items, a complete rework of gem staves, secret seeds, and a crossplay tease that actually names a version number. The gem staff change alone has me rethinking my mage build. I’ve always treated those staves as early-game throwaways, but if matching a staff with a robe boosts damage and adds unique effects, they might actually be viable later. That’s the kind of change that makes me want to start a fresh character just to test it.

What’s actually in the 1.4.5.7 update

The changelog is long, so let me hit the highlights. The new items are the headline: Daybloom Staff, Glacier Fang, Mystic Bloom, Lightning Strike, Clay Bud Staff, Ruinous Staff, Arc Surge, Silver Bracer, Snake Band, Mobius Strip, Wicked Armlet, Poison Barb, Harpy Charm, Snapping Stone, Chaos Cylinder, Heavy Sling, Ouroboros Ring, Twilight Grasp, Scout’s Sling, Templar’s Sling, Royal Guard’s Harness, Pyroclastic Stone, Armlet of Ruin, Seraph Necklace, Phoenix Quiver, Wicked Claws, Silver Shield, Sweet Barb, Catalyst Band, Druidic Serpent Cloak, Crossed Heart Necklace, Restoration Shield, and Mystic Arts Sash. That’s a lot of names, and I have no idea what half of them do yet — but the sheer variety suggests Re-Logic is filling gaps across multiple classes.

The gem staff rework is the big mechanical change. Each gem now enchants staff shots with a unique effect, and equipping a gem robe adds the robe’s gem effect on top. Matching a staff and robe increases shot damage. They also cut the metal cost of gem staves by about 30%, which makes crafting them less of a resource sink early on.

Beyond that, there are quality-of-life wins: loadout equipment sharing (favorite an item to make it shareable between loadouts), dead players can skip the respawn timer when there’s no danger, sentries can be dismissed by right-clicking, glowsticks and bombs can be picked up from the world, and quest fish can be picked up even if you already have one. The Basilisk mount now fits through 3-block corridors, which is a small thing but will save a lot of dismounting.

They also added two new secret seeds, because of course they did. No hints on what they do yet, but the community will crack them within days. And there’s a new item called the Guide to Old Style Parkour that restores some movement techniques removed in 1.4.5 — that’s a direct response to player feedback, and I appreciate them admitting the removal stung.

Why this update matters for Terraria players

First, the crossplay tease. Re-Logic says the next update after this one — barring critical fixes — will be Crossplay Phase One, version 1.4.6. They didn’t give a date, but they did say the Re-Logic and DR Studios teams are meeting at Gamescom next week to plan future updates. That’s more concrete than we’ve had in a while, and it tells me crossplay is actually close, not just a distant promise.

Second, the console and mobile situation. This update is PC-only for now. Re-Logic originally wanted a simultaneous release, but Gamescom forced their hand. Console and mobile versions are going into submissions immediately, so those players will get it as soon as the platform holders approve. If you’re on Switch or PlayStation, you’re waiting a bit longer.

I’m cautiously optimistic. The gem staff rework could genuinely shift mage progression, and the new items might open up hybrid builds. The loadout sharing and respawn timer skip are small but meaningful quality-of-life fixes. And the fact that Re-Logic is still adding secret seeds this late in the game’s life tells me they’re not done experimenting. I’ll be diving in tonight to test the staves and hunt down those new items.
