Crate Entertainment just dropped a community announcement confirming the Farthest Frontier v1.2 update is nearly ready, with v1.3 and an expansion also on the way. It’s the first real roadmap we’ve had in a while, and I’m honestly a little relieved.
I’ve been playing Farthest Frontier on and off since early access launched, and the silence lately had me worried. City-builders live or die on their update cadence, and when the forums go quiet, I start checking my mod list for signs of life. This announcement isn’t just a roadmap—it’s a pulse check, and the pulse is strong.
What Crate Entertainment Actually Announced
The post is short but packed. Here’s the breakdown:

- V1.2 is nearly ready. Playtesting is expected to begin this fall, with a full preview coming in about a month.
- The Trading Post is getting an overhaul. The devs admit the current UI is… well, they didn’t finish the sentence, but we all know. They say fans of trading will like the new mechanics.
- V1.3 is coming early next year. Details will follow after v1.2 ships.
- An expansion is in development. They tease “new production lines, mechanics, resources, and much much more,” and the word “swimmingly” is used. Make of that what you will.
- A merch campaign with Makeship is running for about another week, featuring Scorv and Crate pins if funded.
The most telling line for me is this one, because it confirms they know the trading system has been a pain point:
if you are a fan of trading (or perhaps not cause the UI…well…yeah…), you will find the overhauled Trading Post and mechanics to be to your liking.
What This Means for Farthest Frontier Players
I’ve sunk dozens of hours into Farthest Frontier, and the trading system has always felt like the weakest link. The production chains are satisfying, the survival pressure is real, but the moment I try to sell surplus or import something specific, I’m fighting the interface. So hearing that v1.2 is centered on a Trading Post overhaul is exactly what I wanted to hear.

But I’m also keeping my expectations in check. “Nearly ready” and “playtesting this fall” means we’re still months away from a public release, and v1.3 is even further out. The expansion is the real wildcard—new production lines and resources could fundamentally change how the game plays, but we have no timeline on that at all. For now, I’m just glad the game isn’t winding down.
If you’re like me and you’ve been waiting for a reason to jump back in, this is it. I’ll be watching for that full preview next month. If the trading overhaul is as deep as they’re implying, it might finally fix the one thing that’s been holding this game back for me.
