Core Keeper Roadmap Splits One Big Update Into Three

Pugstorm just dropped the core keeper roadmap on Steam, and it’s a three-parter called Road to the Maw. I’ve been waiting for news like this since I fell down my first hole in the underground, so I read it twice before writing this.

My first reaction is relief. I was half-expecting a single massive update that would take another year to cook. Instead, they’re splitting it into three updates and getting content out faster. That’s the right call, and honestly, it makes me more excited than any single big patch ever could.

The part that really caught my eye is update 1.3, Riders of the Underground. They say it brings new ways to traverse the underground, and the only hint they give is “giddy up.” If that means mounts, I am absolutely here for it. I’ve spent too many hours walking back and forth across my base. If it means minecarts or something else, I’m still curious, but the tease is working on me.

What the Roadmap Actually Says

The announcement is pretty clear about structure. Road to the Maw is three interconnected major content updates. Originally, this was going to be one single update they called Core Keeper’s “crowning glory.” But the team realized that building toward one release would make players wait much longer. So they split it into three parts. The first two are about expanding depth in existing features and systems, and the third is the big reveal.

Update 1.3 is Riders of the Underground, coming later this year. Travel and transport are the main focus, but they also mention a new sub-biome, new weapons, enemy variety, new pets, progression rebalancing, a new legendary item, and improvements to mage and summoner playstyles based on community feedback. That’s a lot for one update, and it’s the one I’m most eager to see.

Update 1.4 is Trials of the Depths. The studio describes it as “Experience the game, harder than ever,” aimed at veteran players and thrill seekers. It’s about depth and mastery. They even say, “Daredevils, we hear you, and we’re looking forward to trying to kill you.” I respect the confidence, but I’m not sure I’m ready for whatever they’re cooking.

Update 1.5 is Beyond the Breach. The tagline is “Cross into what was sealed away.” This one includes a new biome that reveals what lies beyond Breaker’s Reach. The studio calls it a pivotal moment, the update the journey has been leading up to. After that, they don’t have concrete plans to announce, but they want community feedback on whether to keep making more content.

There’s also a note about minor content updates. The first one will follow update 1.3, and they joke there will be plenty “maw” to come. Plus, they’re working on a Steam Workshop beta test to improve mods and the modding experience.

What This Means for Players

For anyone playing Core Keeper right now, this roadmap changes the near future. We’re not waiting for one giant patch anymore. We’re getting three updates, and the first one is coming later this year. That’s a real shift in pacing, and I think it’s smart. The game has a lot of systems that could use more depth, and updates 1.3 and 1.4 seem aimed exactly at that.

I’m especially curious about the mage and summoner improvements. Those playstyles have needed love for a while. If they’re actually listening to community feedback on that, it could make a lot of players come back. The new sub-biome and enemy variety also suggest the underground is about to feel less samey, which is good.

The one thing I’m watching is whether update 1.5 can deliver on the buildup. They’re calling it pivotal, and if it’s a letdown after two updates of buildup, people will be loud about it. But I’m not going to borrow trouble. For now, I’m just glad the roadmap is real, and the first stop involves something I can ride. Hopefully.
