Soulmask Beyond Gravity update adds the Burning Highlands, new masks, and new bosses

CampFire Studio posted the Beyond Gravity update notes for Soulmask on August 31, and I’ve been picking through them ever since. This is the kind of patch that makes me want to call in sick and lose a weekend.

I’ll be honest, the Burning Highlands is what got me. A whole new area attached to Shifting Sands, and it’s not just a reskin — it’s got an Ancient Dungeon, Holy Ruins, Floating Island Ruins, and a Pyramid Ruins with its own dungeon. That’s a lot of new ground to die on. The new masks are the other thing. Enforcer, Shadow Hunter, Ruler of the Barren Sands. Three new masks means three new ways to play, and I’m already theorycrafting which one fits my solo build.

What the Beyond Gravity update actually adds

The update is a client update, so you’ll need to download it before you can play. The headline is the Burning Highlands, a new area in Shifting Sands. It comes with an Ancient Dungeon, Holy Ruins, Floating Island Ruins, and a Pyramid Ruins that has its own Ruins Dungeon. There’s also a Ruins Dungeon added to the Pyramid Ruins in Star Plain, so even if you don’t rush the new zone, there’s new content in an old one.

Three new masks are in the drop pools. The Ruler of the Barren Sands Mask drops from the Star Plain Pyramid. The Shadow Hunter Mask drops from the Burning Highlands Pyramid. The Enforcer Mask drops from the Burning Highlands Holy Ruins. Each of those also has a Restrictive Module: Ruler of the Barren Sands from the Blackstone Cliff Ruins Dungeon, Shadow Hunter from the Burning Highlands Holy Ruins, and Enforcer from the same Holy Ruins.

New bosses are always the part I read twice. There’s a new boss on Floating Island called Central Core. And three new Sand Bandit bosses: Sand Bandit Shadow of Slaughter – Uncrowned, Sand Bandit King of Fiery Flames – Soulflamer, and Sand Bandit King of Fiery Flames – Bone Scorcher. That’s four new fights, and the Sand Bandit names alone make me want to see their mechanics.

There’s a new player ability too: Gene Recovery, default key X. When you’re Severely Injured or in Feign Death, you can use it to restore all HP. Cooldown is 60 seconds, and it can’t be used in War Mode. That’s a huge survivability tool for solo players like me.

Building got some love. Floating Foundation was added, and it requires no power. Can’t be used in War Mode, though. There’s also a Mist Collector and official prebuilt blueprints you can select in Building Mode. I’m not much of a builder, but prebuilt blueprints might actually get me to put down more than a box with a bed.

Quality of life changes are scattered through the notes. Hammer basic attacks are now combo attacks. Spear Mastery – Overturn got an animation update. Mastery Learning was added to the Training Ground. Exploration point progress now displays for each map region. And there’s an Irreparable Equipment category on the Dismantling Bench, which should make cleaning out my storage less of a guessing game.

One drop location moved: Restrictive Module (Radiant Battle Hymn) now drops from the Red Dunes Ruins instead of the Blackstone Cliff Ruins Dungeon. If you were farming it in the old spot, time to relocate.

What this means for Soulmask players

This is a major content drop, not a routine patch. A new region with multiple dungeons, three new masks, four new bosses, and a new ability that can save your run. For a game that’s been out a while, this is the kind of update that brings people back and gives veterans something to grind.

I’m most curious about the Burning Highlands. Is it endgame content, or something you can push into mid-game? The drop pools suggest a progression: Star Plain Pyramid for Ruler of the Barren Sands, Burning Highlands Pyramid for Shadow Hunter, and Holy Ruins for Enforcer. That’s a clear path if you want all three masks.

Gene Recovery is the sleeper hit here. A 60-second cooldown full heal when you’re nearly dead is massive for solo play. I can already think of a dozen times I’ve died to a Sand Bandit ambush where this would have saved me. The fact that it’s disabled in War Mode keeps it from being a PvP problem, which is a smart call.

I’m also watching the Floating Foundation. No power required means you can build in more places without worrying about generators. That could open up some wild base locations, especially around the Floating Island Ruins.

If you’ve been away from Soulmask, this is the update to come back for. If you’re still playing, you’ve got a new region to explore, new masks to chase, and new bosses to learn. I know what I’m doing this weekend.
