Dune: Awakening Confirms Cross-Play, Polar Cap Update, and Filmic Archive DLC Release Date

Funcom dropped their Gamescom roundup on Steam today, and it’s a lot to take in. Cross-play is confirmed, the Polar Cap update is coming later this year, and the Filmic Archive DLC has a firm release date. I’ll be honest, I was expecting maybe one of these announcements. Three at once is a lot, and I’m still deciding which one I’m most excited about.

I’ve been playing Dune: Awakening since the early access days, and the survival loop in Hagga Basin has always been my comfort zone. Extreme heat, sandworms, the constant need for water—it’s punishing but fair. Now they’re throwing extreme cold at us with Polar Cap, and I don’t know if my stillsuit is ready for that. The cross-play confirmation is huge for the community, though. I’ve got friends on console who’ve been waiting to jump in, and the fact that we’ll finally be able to share the same Arrakis is a big deal.

What Funcom Actually Announced

The Filmic Archive DLC launches September 22 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. It’s priced at $9.99 and includes a bunch of movie-inspired cosmetics. You get the Aegis of the Unwalked Path armor, inspired by Paul Atreides’ visions in Dune: Part One, and the Caladan Stormcoat worn by Paul and Duke Leto. There’s also Harkonnen Cataphract Armor, Atreides Hoplite Armor, and a Longhaul Stillsuit inspired by Gurney Halleck’s gear in Dune: Part Two.

The DLC doesn’t stop at armor. It includes 73 Sardaukar building pieces and 17 decorations, so you can build a fortress worthy of the Emperor’s elite. There are three Sardaukar armor sets, an Oathblade, a Benediction Disruptor, two emotes, and a tactical swatch. If you’re into the military aesthetic of the Sardaukar, this is a pretty comprehensive pack.

Cross-play is confirmed, but there’s no date yet. Funcom says it’s coming after the console launch, and they’re not ready to share specifics. Their goal is to let players share stories, alliances, rivalries, and battles regardless of platform. That’s the kind of thing that keeps a survival game alive long-term, so I’m glad they’re prioritizing it.

The Polar Cap update is a free expansion arriving later this year. It’s a new survival map with new mechanics, locations, resources, loot, craftable items, and a standalone storyline. Funcom says it’s a very different challenge from Hagga Basin—instead of scorching heat, you’ll contend with extreme cold. And they emphasized it’s “damn cold.” Survival will demand new tools, careful preparation, and clever ways to endure conditions unlike anything in the base game.

What This Means for Players

I’m cautiously optimistic about Polar Cap. The heat mechanics in Hagga Basin are already intense, and I’ve died more times than I’d like to admit from dehydration. A cold-based map flips the script completely. New survival mechanics could mean insulation, frostbite, or something else entirely. I’m hoping it’s not just a reskin of the existing systems with a temperature swap. The promise of a standalone storyline is interesting, though—it suggests they’re treating this as more than a simple map addition.

The Filmic Archive DLC is a cosmetic pack, and at $9.99 it’s a reasonable price for what you get. I’m not usually one for armor sets, but the Sardaukar building pieces might tempt me. I’ve spent hours building bases, and having imperial-themed pieces would be a nice change. The emotes are a fun touch, though I doubt I’ll ever use the Sardaukar Kneel in a serious moment.

Cross-play is the announcement I’m most excited about, even without a date. Survival games live and die by their communities, and splitting the player base across platforms would’ve been a mistake. The fact that Funcom is committing to it now, even before console launch, tells me they’re thinking long-term. I just hope the implementation is smooth—cross-play can be a mess if not done right.

Overall, this roundup gives me a reason to keep playing. A free expansion later this year, a cheap DLC in a few weeks, and cross-play on the horizon. It’s a solid roadmap, and I’m looking forward to seeing how Polar Cap changes the survival meta. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go stock up on water before the cold hits.
