SCUM’s Final Into the Wild Update Slips to October 5

Gamepires posted on Steam that the final SCUM Into the Wild update now lands October 5, not the end of September. Testing found issues with the new fishing changes, so they’re taking a few extra days.

I’ve been waiting on this one. Fishing in SCUM has always felt like a placeholder, and the idea of a fish actually pulling line and tiring out depending on how I reel is something I didn’t know I wanted until they said it. A fishing leaderboard is exactly the kind of dumb competitive thing this game needs. I’m also weirdly excited about crows circling carcasses as a player detector. That’s the kind of organic PvP signal that makes SCUM feel alive.

The delay is minor, but it’s honest. They found problems, they’re fixing them. I’d rather have a working fishing system than a broken one on the last day of September.

What the Final Update Brings

Fishing gets the big rework. Larger fish pull harder and move side to side. Reeling speed matters for tiring them out, and bait and equipment choices have more impact. The HUD now shows line tension and bait condition clearly. Three tiers of fishing quests track through the Journal and reward Fame, cash, and sometimes more gear. A fishing leaderboard lets you compare catches with other prisoners.

Seagulls and crows return to the Island. They fly over lakes and fields, perch on rooftops, and circle carcasses or players. Get too close or make noise and they scatter, which can tip off other players. You can shoot them and skin them for meat and feathers.

Mutant kills now have a crafting payoff. Materials recovered from mutant animals can be used to craft new clothing. That’s on top of the Master Hunter quests, and it’s something players have asked for.

The TEC1 Research Facility becomes a Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch arena in the Event system. It was built for the Apex Hunt finale, but now it’s a permanent battleground.

Clothing wear gets a fix. Clothes now stay clean and undamaged until dirt or damage hits 30%, instead of showing wear immediately. Dirt builds up slower in general use, but crawling on the ground still makes you filthy fast.

The Specialist Angler DLC Pack launches alongside the update. It unlocks a themed fishing set—rod, reel, waders, boots, backpack—craftable or purchasable from the Fisher Trader, plus three emotes. Each character gets a starting selection of bait, hooks, floaters, and line once per server at no cost. Those consumables aren’t exclusive; anyone can find or craft them.

What Comes After

The next update won’t start a new season. It’s a standalone release that includes tattoos with an expanded placement system and a starter selection of over 40 tattoos for everyone. Two optional cosmetic tattoo DLC packs are planned. Photo Mode becomes free for all players, and Supporter Pack 2 owners get replacement tattoos at no extra cost.

Controller support on PC is also planned for that same update. A partial official server wipe will happen with it. Character stats and gold stay, but bases, gear, and supplies get cleared. Private servers won’t be forced to wipe.

The temporary Awareness and Archery progression boosts stay active through the October 5 update, then end with the following update. Nothing earned is lost; you just go back to normal rates.

Gamepires also addressed DLC concerns. They know some players felt there were too many paid packs during Into the Wild. They’ll use sales data and feedback to plan future DLC. After the Specialist Angler Pack, the tattoo packs are the final paid DLC of 2026. Future paid DLC will have its theme and key contents shared in update previews.

My Take

This update feels like a proper finale for a season that overstayed its welcome. The fishing rework is the kind of depth SCUM needs—not just more items, but actual systems that change how you play. The mutant clothing crafting gives a reason to hunt the rarest targets beyond a quest checklist. And TEC1 as a deathmatch map is a smart reuse of a space that was too good for one event.

The delay is fine. Five days is nothing when the alternative is a broken fishing system. I’m more interested in whether the fishing leaderboard actually works, because SCUM’s leaderboards have been hit or miss. And I’m curious how the bird behavior plays in practice—if crows circling a corpse actually gives away a sniper’s position, that’s a real PvP change.

The partial wipe announcement is the kind of transparency I appreciate. Telling players weeks ahead that bases and gear will be cleared, but stats and gold stay, is fair. Private server admins get to choose, which is how it should be.

The DLC mea culpa is also notable. Admitting there were too many paid packs during a season and promising to slow down is rare. Whether they stick to it is another question, but for now, I’ll take it.

October 5 can’t come soon enough. I’ve got a fishing rod with my name on it and a crow to spook.
